Mayor Will Kicks Off the Austin Commuter Challenge

April 6, 2009

Thursday April 2nd Mayor Will Wynn kicked off the Bicycle Sport Shop’s Austin Commuter Challenge with a press conference and Mayoral proclamation at City Hall.

We are pretty excited about the opportunity to host this event. Did you know that 50% of all trips we make are within 3 miles of our house? That’s the perfect distance for a bicycle commute. Now let me be clear on something on the front end. A commute does not mean riding to work. A commute is defined as a one way trip from point A to Point B. This is what we are basing the challenge on. We want to encourage Austinites to trade those short trips by car for short trips by bike.

Riding your bike is fun. Last summer the [Bicycle Sport Shop] employees decided to make a game out of our commutes. I had been talking with Quality Bicycle Parts about a Commuter Challenge that they had created for their staff and thought this would be a fun way to encourage people to ride more often. We divided into 6 teams of 8 players and set up a bracket to compete head to head to see which team would earn the right to talk the most commuter smack. During the challenge we saw a significant drop in the number of cars in our parking lot and it was great to hear everyone talking smack throughout the store. It was something fresh to keep things fun and interesting.

One thing led to another and began talking to QBP about the possibility of a City Wide Challenge. We had so much fun at Bicycle Sport Shop I wanted to get more people involved in the “game”. As it turned out QBP was working with Civia Cycles on a project called greenlight, a web based commute tracker and challenge. One thing led to another and here we are hosting the Austin Commuter Challenge. So if you are currently riding a bike for fun, fitness or function; join us in the Austin Commuter Challenge this May for Bike Month. Register now at AustinCommuterChallenge.com:

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about registration, rules or commuting in general.
