Important Hearings regarding the Updated Master Bike Plan

May 1, 2009

The Planning Commission and City Council will hold public hearings on a proposed amendment to the Austin Metropolitan Area Transportation Plan (AMATP).  The amendment is to update and replace the existing Austin Bicycle Master Plan.  The Planning Commission hearing will be held on May 12th at City Hall, 301 W. 2nd Street, in Council Chambers Room 1001 at 6:00 pm.  The City Council hearing will be held on May 21st at City Hall, 301 W. 2nd Street in Council Chambers Room 1001 at 6:00 p.m.

This amendment would create a new Bicycle Master Plan for the City of Austin, with the vision of becoming a world class bicycling city.

The updated Bicycle Master Plan combines the 1996 and 1998 Bicycle Plans into one document. The first Chapter describes the benefits of bicycling to the community, the history of bicycle planning in Austin, accomplishments since the 1996/1998 Plan, and an explanation of the development of the plan. Chapters 2 through 5 go into detail about each of the Plan elements— The Bicycle System, Education & Promotion, Safety & Enforcement, and Implementation & Funding—and outlines the recommended actions to accomplish each objective to ultimately achieve the goals of the Plan. Chapter 6 concludes with a reiteration of the importance of implementing this bicycle plan and a recommendation of critical first steps the City of Austin should take to implement this effort. Lastly, the appendices include supplementary information related to major topics of the Plan including but not limited to a by-street bicycle accommodation recommendation table, and a trails master plan map.

These hearings are to determine the advisability of this amendment. You are invited to be present at these hearings if you desire to discuss this amendment or the advisability of a modification thereof. For further information, contact Annick Beaudet, Public Works Department at 974-6505.
