T.G.I.Bicycle Film Festival

August 7, 2009

The Bicycle Film Festival Kicked off with a bang on Wednesday night with Tia Carrera &  The Black  Angels    followed by a moonlight cruise around Austin.  Last night festival  goers met on “The Bridge”  to ride with the  Social Cycling ATX crew to JOYRIDE, an art  show hosted by East Austin’s CoLab  Studio.  Marcus Sanford,  Austin on 2 Wheels,  posted some great photos on flikr.

If you missed either of these events, don’t fear the films are here.  Films start tonight at  7pm. Personally, I am  most excited about  Where Are You Go.  This 60min. film  follows riders 7000 miles across Africa as they  participate in the world’s longest  bicycle race, the Tour d’Afrique.

The Tour d’Afrique takes place each year from January to May enticing both racers and expeditioners with the beauty and mystery of Africa. The event starts in Cairo and travels through 10 countries.  Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi…*deep breath*…Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and finally Cape Town, South Africa. “ will cycle along the Nile past ancient temples, across the rugged biblical landscape of Ethiopia’s Simian Mountains, and through game reserves teeming with wildlife.”

So what does the Tour of a lifetime cost? Entry fee for the full tour will run you almost $12,000 and does not include flight, equiptment, vaccinations, visas, souvenirs, food on rest days, or gratuities so start plopping those extra pennies in your piggy bank.  Visit the Tour d’Afrique FAQ page for more inforamtion regarding safety, gear, training and more.
